The Forest Green Pilgrimage 2014

The nostalgic reunion of Old Philologions took place at the Old Mill, Forest Green, from 11.00 am on Sunday September 14th. Unlike several of the more recent reunions where attendance figures have been somewhat disappointing, this year there were 26 OPs with 18 family members or guests plus a handful of children. The weather was perfect. Of the old boys that made it this year, mention must be made of Bernard Ashfold who joined St. Marylebone Grammar School in 1934, leaving in 1940. While OPs greeted each other and looked at various items of school and camp memorabilia, Rob and Bridget Tims, together with wardens Su and Roy, plus others, prepared a delicious barbeque of turkey burgers, chicken legs and sausages, together with a very tasty salad. At 1.00 pm the food was ready. We sat down to enjoy the meal, some in the Mill's dining room while others took advantage of the marquee that is erected during the June working weekend, (that structure is dismantled during the October working weekend .... volunteers are always welcome to join us!). It is a feature of our reunions that Peter Sayers always ensures there is wine available for those requiring something more than tea, coffee or fruit juice. This year there was more than enough! Following the meal, a few words were spoken by our President, Sir Brian Vickers., then those that felt able to enjoy a stroll from the Mill to Leith Hill Tower were asked to be ready to leave at 2.35 pm. 25 of us arrived at the Tower and as the picture shows, none seemed the worse for wear, despite having eaten a large lunch. It was a beautifully clear day and the South Downs could easily be seen. The walkers then made their way back to The Mill and were rewarded with strawberries, cream and meringues. The Old Philologians that attended were: Malcolm King (1943 - 1948), Peter Woodman (1946 - 1951), Gerald Blanc (1947 - 1955), John Miller (1949 - 1955), Allan Sensicle (1950 - 1957), Ian Collins (1956 - 1963), Robert McClenning (1958 - 1963), Peter Walter (1958 - 1966), Rob Tims (1962 - 1970), Omar Harmon (1973 - 1980), Brian Vickers (1948 - 1957), Martin Tims (1955 - 1962), Barrie Crees (1949 - 1954), Jack Watson (1947 - 1953), David Griller (1959 - 1966), Brian Saperia (1948 - 1957), Photios Demetriou (1969 - 1974), Mike Springate (1946 - 1952), Peter Sayers (1944 - 1952), Tony Antoniou (1969 - 1976), Michael Bauch (1956 - 1963), Bernard Ashfold (1934 - 1940), Adrian Morris (1947 - 1952), Michael Dunne (1952 - 1954), Richard Richards (1948 - 1954) and Colin Bosley (Staff). Another lovely day out at our fondly-remembered "S.M.G.S. Camp"

2014 Annual General Meeting

The Association's Annual General Meeting was held at Abercorn School 248 Marylebone Road, courtesy of the Headmistress, on Wednesday 9th April 2014. The attendance was slightly better than most years, around twenty-five, because prior to the formal proceedings we were to be entertained by Dr Keith Crook, the son of the never-to-be-forgotten K.D.

A summary of Keith's talk can be downloaded from here which can be read together with some photographs which will be new to most Old Philologians.

                                                     For the Photographs    Click Here

A copy of the Officers' reports presented at the meeting can be found by clicking here. These were approved by the meeting. There was a minor hiccough in that the Annual Accounts for 2013 could not be presented due to an administrative problem. However these can now be downloaded. Both candidates who stood for re-election were duly elected and the Committee were delighted that the vacancy for one Committee member was filled by Brian Saperia. (Well done that man!)

A slightly unusual step was taken at the meeting when Sir Brian Vickers proposed that Dr Keith Crook be made an Honorary Member of the Association in view of his close links with S.M.G.S. and his knowledge of the school gleaned from experiences with his father. A nem con vote was recorded and it was further agreed that Peter Walter send an Association tie to Keith. The meeting closed at approximately 8.45 p.m.

Saracens Lunch

Two years ago an inaugural lunch was held at the Saracens Amateur Rugby Football Club thanks to Gary Donovan for organising it. Those who attended were delighted with the quality of the food served and the hospitality we received. As many of us know we have a strong bond with the Club having founded it in the late 1890s and some in their younger days actually played for one of its teams. This year the lunch is planned for Saturday March 22nd and the menu, for which the cost is £25 per head and includes wine at the table, is as follows :-

Starter Smoked Salmon Cannelloni served with cucumber spaghetti and toasted bread

Main Course Steak and Guinness Pie served with glazed seasonal vegetables and creamy mashed potato Dessert Medley of Deserts including profiteroles,,cheesecake and mini-pavolova with chantilly cream

Cheese Board

Can you let me know in advance if you are vegetarian, or have any food related allergy, so that the chef can prepare a special meal for you?

Please advise Dick Durran if you would like to attend and send a cheque for £25 made out to "The Old Philologians"
